Renshaw Baking's Valentine's Day Competition

I got an email recently asking if I'd like to take part in another competition with Renshaw.

This time, there was a bit of a twist. The brief was "Challenge one of your loved ones – husband, boyfriend, partners, parents or children to show you the love and bake something special for Valentine’s Day."

A Blast from the Past

The other day, my mum phoned me and asked if she could put something on my blog.

I was intrigued (if a little worried!) about what she was going to send over to me.

About 10 minutes later, the following pictures dropped into my inbox with the subject "Ha!". There was also a note saying "Surprising things that mothers keep in a box x".

I was pleasantly surprised, and also relieved that there were no pictures of me!

As I've mentioned before, I did some sugarcraft at school. These are two of the competition pieces I made. They're a little faded, but they are now around 15 years old. I think I'm a little faded after 15 years too!

I'd love to get back into making sugar flowers - seeing these reminded me how much I used to enjoy it!

Have you ever made sugar flowers before?

Renshaw - 2014 Baking Trends

Now we are into 2014, there has been a lot of interest as to what this year's baking trends are.

Renshaw have a great article on their blog, written by top cake decorator Mich Turner. Mich shares her opinions on what she thinks will be popular during 2014.

The article is well worth a read - you can find the link here

To accompany this, Renshaw have started a Pinterest board to share the predicted trends.

They very kindly asked me to join in and pin to the board along with a few other bloggers and friends of Renshaw.

I've added a couple of pins already and there are some great pins added by Renshaw and Candace of www.candyandcake.ca.

You can find a link to the board here.

Happy pinning!

Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014

The end of 2013 seems to have flown by in no time at all - I've no idea where the time has gone...

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year!

It's been a while since I posted, so I thought I'd share a few of the things I've been baking recently and what I'd like to do in 2014.

I didn't mention in my last post, but I also entered the Christmas Bauble cake into a competition at Bolling Hall in Bradford. They were holding a Victorian Fayre which included a Christmas Cake competition. As I'd made the cake for the Renshaw competition the day before, I decided to take it along and enter it there too.

Renshaw Christmas Cake Competition

Renshaw are currently holding another cake competition, and I was very kindly invited to take part.

Renshaw are a long established company who make sugarpaste, marzipan and frostings. You can find the Renshaw website at www.renshawbaking.com

This competition is for a Christmas Cake, and I was sent a pack of icing to use to decorate the cake. I opted for the Traditional Pack, which contained 500g white decor-ice, 250g of red, green and black decor-ice's, 500g Whitworths Superfine Icing sugar and a tube of Whitworths Twist and Sprinkle Icing sugar shaker.

I'm not a huge fan of fruit cakes, so I decided to make a chocolate cake with white chocolate buttercream. As I got some hemisphere cake pans for my birthday (Thanks Mum!), I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to try them out.
